Christine Feehan used to write about strong, loving relationships but like her ridiculous Shadow series, this series is descending into "woman meets abusive man who spanks her without consent, and she likes it". If you're going to do BDSM, remember the consent bit. It's not sexy, it's not love and it's not even the tiniest bit titillating for a man to spank a woman he's just met, without consent or knowing her name. I can't even get to the rest of the book. No building the relationship, no story to speak of, just straight into the abuse. Thank the lord for the ability to return e-books for a full refund. I'm really annoyed about having to find a new author now. It is in the water? First Kenyon goes off the rails and now Feehan? This book was a solid 5 star . . . until the ending. First, the book was only at 89% when it ended. Come on Ms. Feehan. Enough of the Carpathian lineage, chants, etc. Must every book have these take up 10% or more of the space? It would have been much better if the ending was better developed. This is the second book where it seemed like a word limit was reached and the ending practically stopped mid-sentence. I truly felt cheated and sorry that I didn't wait to get it from the library because it was not cheap.
